Andy James: The Art of Staying True to Your Voice

From the flamenco stages of Spain to the jazz clubs of America, Andy James has lived a life defined by rhythm, reinvention, and relentless dedication to her craft. Once a world-acclaimed flamenco dancer based in Madrid, she has since become a celebrated jazz vocalist whose latest album, Happy People, blends the fire of flamenco with the soul of jazz. Recorded in Seville, Rome, New York, and Las Vegas, the 16-track project showcases Andy’s love for cultural fusion, original songwriting, and connecting deeply with her audience.

In our conversation on The Chris & Sandy Show, Andy offered more than just behind-the-scenes stories — she shared hard-earned wisdom for anyone chasing a dream in the arts or beyond.

Lessons We Learned from Andy James

1. Great art takes relentless work.
Andy still practices daily, both singing and dancing, because she knows skills fade when you stop using them. “If I stop practicing, I forget things… everything just sort of falls to bits,” she told us.

2. Stay true to your artistic vision.
Her advice for aspiring artists? Don’t just create what you think will sell or please critics. “Write your own songs, find your own style… success will come.”

3. Embrace creative tension.
Andy, her husband and producer Piero Pata, and pianist/arranger Jon Cowherd sometimes debate over arrangements and chord changes, but she sees those discussions as part of making something unique and meaningful.

4. Surround yourself with a strong team.
From sound mixer Josh Connley to her world-class ensemble, Andy knows that great music is a team effort. She gives credit to every player, technician, and collaborator who helps bring her vision to life.

5. Measure success by connection, not popularity.
Andy once thought success meant pleasing everyone. Now, she defines it by the ability to connect with her audience on a deeper, more intimate level.
