We had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Monty Moran on The Chris & Sandy Show back in 2021, and it turned into one of the most powerful conversations we’ve ever had. Monty — former co-CEO of Chipotle, best-selling author of Love Is Free. Guac Is Extra., and the visionary behind the PBS docuseries Connected: A Search for Unity — brought a rare blend of business acumen, heartfelt wisdom, and authentic leadership to the table.

Whether you’re building a business, leading a team, navigating family, or just trying to live with more purpose, Monty’s insights are a masterclass in how to lead with heart, humility, and clarity.

Top Lessons We Took Away from Monty Moran

1. Leadership is Love — But Not the Fluffy Kind

Monty breaks the stereotype that love has no place in business. For him, love isn’t about being “nice” — it’s about deeply caring for the people you lead, challenging them, empowering them, and refusing to let them settle for less than their best. True leadership, he says, requires knowing your people, believing in them, and helping them grow — even when it’s uncomfortable.

“The only real power a leader has is that others choose to follow.”

2. Culture Is Built by Empowered People

Monty’s leadership philosophy was the driving force behind Chipotle’s explosive growth. At the center of it? Empowerment. He defined empowerment as creating an environment where people feel confident in their ability and encouraged by their circumstances — which allows them to fully contribute their talents. It’s not about managing people — it’s about freeing them to thrive.

“A top performer doesn’t just do great work — they make others better too.”

3. Hire for Ambition — Even if They Won’t Stay Forever

One surprising insight from Monty was this: hire people with big dreams, even if you know they may outgrow your company. Why? Because driven, purpose-filled people elevate everything while they’re with you — and sometimes they stay longer than expected when the culture aligns with their values.

“You don’t marry someone just because they’ll stay forever. You marry because there’s passion and purpose. Same goes for hiring.”

4. Struggle Isn’t the Enemy — It’s the Teacher

Monty’s PBS series, Connected: A Search for Unity, was born from his belief that everyday people have extraordinary wisdom — especially those who’ve endured struggle. Whether flying across the country or leading a business, he believes that challenge refines us and draws us together when we let it.

“Struggle is underrated. It’s where people find their gifts, their strength, and their story.”

5. Vulnerability Is a Superpower

The best leaders aren’t the ones who pretend to know it all — they’re the ones who invite others in. Monty emphasized that when a leader admits they need help or doesn’t have all the answers, it draws people in, not pushes them away. Vulnerability builds trust — and trust builds culture.

“I don’t need a perfect leader. I need a present one. A real one.”

Why This Conversation Matters

In a world chasing titles, growth, and success, Monty reminds us that what truly transforms companies — and lives — is the human heart. His message isn’t just for CEOs or executives — it’s for parents, pastors, teachers, entrepreneurs, and dreamers alike.

At the end of the day, leadership is about love. And love, done well, always leaves people better than it found them.

Want more from Monty?
Pick up his book: Love Is Free.
